TOEFL ITP® Scoring and Reporting

How the Tests are Scored

The TOEFL ITP® Level 1 and Level 2 section scores are determined by the number of correct answers, which is converted to a scaled score. The score report provides scaled scores for the Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension sections. The TOEFL ITP®  Speaking test scores are determined by the responses to the task prompts. Responses are scored using AI technology, which allows for immediate score reporting.

Detailed Score Reports

Detailed and comprehensive, TOEFL ITP® score reports highlight what students have accomplished as English-language learners and where they are ready to improve. Score reports are provided by Goal Testing B.V. ETS Preferred Network offices and include:
  • individual information for your program to distribute to students
  • institutional information and a score roster for internal use only
  • total scores and section scores

Score Validity

TOEFL ITP® score reports are valid for 2 years. Because language proficiency can change considerably in a relatively short period of time, scores more than 2 years old cannot be reported or verified.

Interpreting Scores

To help you interpret TOEFL ITP Level 1 and Level 2 test scores, ETS has conducted several studies, including a score mapping study to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), a score descriptor study and a reliability study.

Score Validity

Results of the CEFR mapping provide the minimum TOEFL ITP®  section scores for four of the levels defined in the CEFR (A2, B1, B2 and C1).

Score Descriptors

As reported in the study Facilitating the interpretation of English language proficiency scores: Combining scale anchoring and test score mapping methodologies, ETS developed score descriptors to help score users interpret TOEFL ITP®  test scores and to provide a better understanding of students’ English-language proficiency.

Reliability Study

Reliability is an important criterion to measure the quality of an assessment product. Tests with high reliability yield consistent scores across different test forms. Download the TOEFL ITP®  Reliability Table (PDF) for TOEFL ITP®  Level 1 and Level 2 tests.

Mapping Study

To help you interpret TOEFL ITP®  Speaking scores, ETS conducted a score mapping study to the levels of the CEFR and developed score descriptors.

Score Descriptors

TOEFL ITP®  Speaking Test Score Descriptors (PDF) are based on CEFR descriptors at the given levels of proficiency and language from the rubrics used to score the TOEFL ITP®  Speaking pilot test. These rubrics informed the AI scoring for the TOEFL ITP®  Speaking Test.
